Quality Function Deployment Software

QFD is now making headway in other industries, including defense, aerospace, and other high technology areas. The preferences of the consumer are then placed in a matrix called the House Of Quality. The matrix is also populated with the known capabilities of the organization at each step of the product development process. The matrix then makes it possible to cross-reference the needs of the consumer against that which the business can achieve. By doing this, the matrix reveals the best product the organization is able to create for the consumer and enables the integration of the consumer needs and wants throughout the development of the product.

By using QFD, the problem was firmly recognized at all levels of the company, including top management. In this way, the focus, discipline, and resources needed to solve the problem were generated. The voice of the customer was already loud and clear, and car companies were aware of the problem, but were consistently failing to improve their designs. The reason for this was that they were following a ‘traditional’ engineering approach. ‘Engineering’ units within each company knew the problem existed, and no doubt had a strong desire to fix it. The traditional approach, however, led to early selection of a preferred design, which usually meant using similar body construction designs and techniques as used on previous models.

Quality Function Deployment (QFD)

The initial part of the quality function deployment framework involves collecting feedback from the ultimate consumers of the product. This is achieved in a number of traditional ways through questionnaires, surveys, market research, etc. The resulting dataset should be large enough that it will offset any deviations or outliers within it, and also make it possible to formulate high-level qfd definition strategic objectives. By making critical information more accessible, reducing meetings, and consolidating communications, you can make your product design process smoother. The house of quality matrix is built by putting processes on the right side, and the top section contains control specs. Then, your team can determine which controls are the most useful and create quality targets.

  • For VA it is already difficult to imagine how at all this method could apply to materials, as there are no parts in the material, while the method is based on the assumption that there are.
  • Perhaps more paint was specified, or more sealer, but the rust problem remained when the product got to the customer.
  • Critical parts or product specs are on the left side of the house of quality matrix, and the control factors are steps to build the product specs.
  • Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is an option that can be used to accommodate this requirement.
  • 2.8 shows schematically a breakdown of the general four-phase QFD process model.

Although there is a good bit of work in developing and building your QFD, the benefits of having all of the elements of your design process in a series of easy-to-read diagrams is well worth the work and effort to develop it. In this example a firmware team (working on low-level robotics) and an applications team (developing the system level applications that ride the robotics) are checking their integration risks and opportunities early in design. The pink sections show that there are places where the measures being driven by one team may impact requirements that seem to be the purview of the other.

The Value of Gap Analysis

Through ranking of the interactions of the “Whats” and the “Hows”, the team can determine which controls could be most useful and develop quality targets for each. This information may also be used for creating Work Instructions, Inspection Sheets or as an input to Control Plans. The tunnel vision focus of QFD on the customer can also have some negative repercussions if customer needs drive up product costs or delay technological innovations that could benefit the company down the line. Quantitative values for the requirements are captured in the “how much” cells at the end of rows and columns, see Figure 2.7. This is when the design requirements are translated into the critical part characteristics that the design department can work with, i.e. from ‘what it should do’ to ‘what it will look like’. Product concepts are created, reviewed to check that they meet the design requirements and the resulting critical part characteristics are documented for use in Stage 3.

Software is an intangible product that is not always conducive to explicit acceptance measures. Design elements are coupled and interdependent, which is different from physical designs that can be deconstructed into independent but functional sub-assemblies, parts and components. Software is not so easily divisible, creating additional design challenges. Example entries for a partially developed QFD1 table for a cordless lawn and garden hand tool with a few row and column entries are given in Figure 2.8.

What Is Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Why Do We Use It?

In the 1970s, corrosion of car bodies and frames was widespread worldwide—in many markets you could expect many makes of car to have serious body rust and chassis rust, within a few years after manufacture. Toyota used QFD to resolve this problem in their new vehicle design programs. Fill in the rows; start QFD2 by asking what the product must do and how much. The planning and design of a hairdryer are documented in the QFD1 and QFD2 matrices in Figs. Maintenance requirements need to be defined, for example cleaning solution changeover intervals, spray gun cleaning schedules.

If you already have a functioning development process, QFD can be used to help support and enhance your current process, not replace it. A large financial institution wanted to create a new model for a brick and mortar banking center. Their Master Black Belt, Gil, suggested the use of QFD as a way to design this new approach to banking. By adhering to the discipline and structure of the QFD process, you will reduce your chance of missing or overlooking something during your development process.

The organising framework for the QFD process is a planning tool called the “house of quality” (simplified example above). Working as a team, design engineers and marketers first establish critical customer attributes for the product. These attributes become the rows of the central matrix of the house of quality. The team may group attributes into broader categories in order to simplify planning and analysis.

The critical part and process parameters are identified, the control methods for these parameters established and the inspection and test methods established. QFD is used to translate the ‘Voice of the Customer’ into the specific technical characteristics and requirements that the design must have to succeed in the market. Build and deliver a quality product or service by concentrating everybody towards the customer satisfaction.
